Radio plays and audio dramatisations

You are here: Index / English Main / Radio Plays

Before I start, I wish to make a specific point: I'll use the term "Radio Play" for radio plays and audio dramatisations alike. In German we have a generic term "Hoerspiel", which literally translates to "a play you listen to". That includes plays broadcast over the radio as well as purely commercial ones you need to buy.

History of my listening and performing

I started out listening to radio plays very early. My brother and me, we share a very large collection of radio plays and audio books - German as well as English. From children's tape, to adults stories, from crime to thriller, from obscure tales to rock solid novels... We collected everything and still listen to all of it. We listen to real radio plays as well as commercial productions. Our universe of radio plays stretches from the 30s-40s to the the here and now. Just to conclude this section here are my favourite series, grand work, obscure tale...

Series
Die drei ??? (the three investigators)
Grand work
Tad Williams: Otherland (24 CDs of REAL radio play!)
crime
Francis Durbridge: Paul Temple (German WDR), Agatha Christie: Hercule Poirot (English BBC)
Children's youngsters'
Anthony Burgess: Der lange Weg zur Teetasse (long trip to teatime) translated and read by Harry rowohlt
Horror / trash
Jason Dark: John Sinclaire (Tonstudio Braun as well as Luebbe Audio)

My own compositions and performing

As you can see - or hear - on the download page, I have recorded a few pieces of music for radio plays myself. The pieces you find in the download section are only examples. There is more and I'm always willing to compose/record more pieces if desired. As you will hear, I like the old style melodic genre of radio play music. I'm not too much into simple or complex arrangement of pads and effect sounds. I enjoy pieces for specific situations as well as generic pieces though. I listened to a lot of 80s radio plays. In that time they liked to have a static repatoire of songs, that definitely influenced my own doing. Just take a listen. I also like to act myself. although not trained professionally, over 20 years of listening and reciting is a kind of training, too. Sometime - late 2006, early 2007 - I'll hopefully perform my first role in an oficial production. that doesn't mean though, that this will be my first public performance. I did a bit of reading and reciting here and there. I'll most certainly upload a small demo of my voice in action over the next week or so. But beware: My microphone is not high class.

what I'm offering

I already mentioned it in the section above. I'm offering to compose music for your radioplays or do some acting for your production. So if you like to employ me for those purposes let me know!

Until there's an example of my voice, here's a description, as far as this is possible. It's a deep voice. Some people call it "sonore" or a nice "radio voice". Others say its very calming, if desired. It's a bit rough, yet powerful. If put to the task, it can be very well modulated or sloppy. My favourite characters are bad ones. Either those, who are just cruel and brutal, or those, who are meen and a very clever and sadistic way. Please, don't take this for streaks of my own character! :-) I love my own language, as well as others. Unfortunitely the only other language I can speak close to perfectly is English. I also love accents, immitating them, learning them, making fun of them or using them to ease conversations. :-) I think, we'll have to wait for the audio example to know what tis voice is like or can be like.
